Bycatches of protected species

Bycatch in a Global Context
Content
How Important Is European Bycatch on the Global Stage? We are inviting all stakeholders to reflect on Europe’s role in tackling the bycatch of vulnerable species as part of a wider global effort. How does fishing activity in European waters contribute to global bycatch? Are we doing enough to reduce bycatch in European waters? And how can we share and learn from successes worldwide?
Why Ask These Questions? Global bycatch is of significant concern for a wide range of vulnerable and protected species, with serious impacts across oceans. While Europe has made strides in research, regulation, and mitigation, some stakeholders question the scale of our contribution in relation to the rest of the world? But can we lead by example, and do we still have an ethical and ecological obligation to act regardless of bycatch rates elsewhere in the world?
How to Contribute Read the resources in the library that consider European bycatch in a Global context. We then encourage you to share your views through our engagement platform and submit a short reflection, comment, or case study.
